The land around New Hope
New Hope Borough sits on the Delaware River across from Lambertville, NJ. Solebury Township surrounds it with rolling, wooded land and many older stone homes.
Slopes, rock and tree cover are common. That makes walls, steps, erosion control and plant choice the main design questions.
Working with slopes
On a slope, you can terrace with walls, plant deep-rooted groundcovers, or add steps and paths that follow the grade. Walls over a certain height often need engineering and may need a permit.
Natural fieldstone and bluestone tend to fit the area's older homes better than bright, uniform block.
Native plants and soft lighting
Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve, just south of town, is a good place to see Pennsylvania native plants in a real setting. Many natives handle local soil and support pollinators.
Warm, low lighting is popular for homes set back in the trees. Path lights for safety and a few uplights on stone or trees usually beat bright floodlights.
Before you ask for quotes
- Note where soil washes out after rain.
- Photograph the stone on your house so new work can match.
- Decide which views and paths matter most at night.
- Ask whether a wall needs engineering or a permit.
